ymca announces capital campaign to fund new facility

Flint, MI – Today, the YMCA of Greater Flint announced a public capital campaign to raise funds for the new downtown YMCA facility which will be part of Harrison Street Commons, a multi-use building combining the new YMCA with apartments and additional spaces for local non-profits. Additionally, the YMCA of Greater Flint Foundation has committed $1 million to the project, signaling both their support and excitement for this development. The endowed fund was created in 2005 to support special projects at the YMCA of Greater Flint and the Foundation board approved the grant to the project which will create a sustainable future for the YMCA association.

The YMCA portion of the project will cost $21 million, and the capital campaign will raise the necessary funds to pay for construction. The campaign is being chaired by volunteers Hurley Medical Center CEO Melany Gavulic, Vienna Township Supervisor Joe Rizk, and Skaff Furniture Carpet One President and CEO Dick Skaff. Recently the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation announced an $11 million grant to the YMCA to support the project.

“We are grateful for the YMCA of Greater Flint Foundation’s support of the mission to build a healthy mind, body, and spirit, and their willingness to put forth such a generous donation to this project. This commitment to a new facility in the city of Flint will have a continued positive impact for decades to come,” said Melany Gavulic, President of the YMCA of Greater Flint Board of Directors.

“After surveying nearly 1,000 for a community needs assessment in fall 2021, we heard loud and clear that our community needed places for youth and families to come together to be healthy, learn, and grow as a community. This new facility will meet the needs of our residents today and into the future,” shared YMCA of Greater Flint CEO, Shelly Hilton.
