Flint, MI – A donor who wishes to remain anonymous has provided a generous $1 million gift to the YMCA of Greater Flint as part of the Building Community Capital Campaign to build the new Downtown YMCA, part of the Harrison Street Commons project.

“On behalf of all the residents of our community who will learn, grow, and thrive at the new YMCA, I am incredibly grateful for this transformational gift,” says Shelly Hilton, YMCA of Greater Flint CEO. “This amazing donation brings us one step closer to seeing the completion of Harrison Street Commons, a campus devoted to health and education in the heart of Flint.”

The construction cost for the new Downtown YMCA is $21 million. The YMCA of Greater Flint is currently engaged in a capital campaign to raise additional funds after the earlier announcements of a grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and Kyle Kuzma Foundation.

“Our donor hopes that this gift inspires others in the community to dig deep and support a project that will serve many in Genesee County for generations to come,” added Shelly Hilton. 

Construction is projected to begin Spring 2023 and the new facility will open January 1, 2025. Operations will continue at the current Downtown Branch until the facility opens. The current facility and the portion of the parking lot located on Third and Chavez owned by the YMCA will be sold for future development.
